Since 1994, Time Warp has been bringing top national and international electronic music acts to the Rhein-Neckar region of Germany at the beginning of every spring. In this sense, Time Warp has always considered itself an initiator and motor of the movement behind this type of music. What Time Warp wants to achieve is quite clear. Both the line-up of artists and the technical execution don't just set standards; they also detect, grasp and support new developments. This made Time Warp one of the first events in Germany where leading artists, like Laurent Garnier or Richie Hawtin, could be seen and heard regularly.

After establishing itself as one of the leading events of its kind in Germany and Europe, the promoters quickly started concentrating on the bigger picture of this youth movement. Early on in the evolution of electronic music, artistic aspects starting developing, which were difficult to present as part of a dance event. In 2005, the promoters therefore started an extra programme with a focus on contemporary media arts to complement the main Time Warp event. This was further developed and in 2007, as part of the anniversary celebrations of the city of Mannheim, the "International Festival for Jetztmusik and Media Arts” was first launched.

The idea is that a festival should create free space, a space for creative ideas, for new developments and for a gathering and sometimes a clash of different (musical) ways of thinking.

The festivals falls into three sections:

concerts&shows: refers to all music events and jetztmusik concerts during the festival week, as well as the final event in the Maimarkthalle Mannheim.

lab: brings together workshops, seminars and interesting qualification possibilities in the areas of music and media in cooperation with the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg

media&arts: includes a film programme as well as cinemix scores and installations or exhibitions of media arts projects. This part of the festival also includes the presentation of the student film awards.
