New place and new date in June
No time for a breather! Just three months after what was a bumper c/o pop 2009, followed by our move into the creative centre cc4711, there’s more big news to report: c/o pop has secured the use of Cologne’s Rheinparkhallen as its new festival headquarters and venue for the c/o pop Convention in 2010. And as if that wasn’t enough, as of next year, c/o pop will take place not during its traditional mid-August slot, but from the 23rd-28th of June 2010!
There are many good reasons for moving the event to an earlier date in the annual festival calendar, not least the various new partnerships and co-operations that have already been made possible as a result. In the context of the reorientation and expansion of the conference module which began in 2009, this step is part of c/o pop’s long term strategy to lastingly strengthen the music and creative industry in Cologne and NRW.
The aim of c/o pop is not just to turn Cologne back into a leading European city of music, but to continue to expand the international creative industry gathering which c/o pop has already been successful in establishing.
After a six-year odyssey through Cologne, the festival now has sole use of a large, well-connected venue which feels ideal for the new c/o pop Convention in particular. The planned cooperation with the NRW media forum will bring added advantages.
The next c/o pop will open on Wednesday 23 June, 2010 and looks set to end officially with a concert in Cologne’s Philharmonic Hall on Monday 28 June. Despite the move to the right hand bank of the Rhine, c/o pop will continue to breathe life into the clubs and venues of the city centre, making unusual use of unexpected locations. One of the things planned for next year is cooperation with Museum Ludwig and with the city’s universities and export offices, something made much easier by the fact that the new date does not fall in the holidays. c/o pop also plans to incorporate into the festival the festivities and excitement surrounding the World Cup in South Africa.
On the case already, working on all this and more, is c/o pop’s new programme team. Elke Kuhlen, head of music of the festival from 2007 – 2009, is taking a year out to work on a private project. She will be replaced by Tobias Thomas, who up until now has held the position of c/o pop editor. Thomas has assisted Kuhlen over the past two years and already managed certain modules of the festival. He will now be supported by Manuel Schottmüller from the Düsseldorf-based events agency SSC. The new editor is Fabian Töpel, operator of the online magazine crazewire, who was involved in producing the texts for the 2009 festival.
More information about c/o pop 2010, the new c/o pop Convention and other cooperation partners will be released in the coming weeks.
